| The
Veterans Services Officer (VSO) and staff assist the County's
veterans and their families in understanding and obtaining
the VA benefits they have earned. This may include submitting
claims for disability compensation or pension, enrolling
in the health care system, and applying for entitlements
such as home loan eligibility and educational benefits.
The
VSO strives to keep the County's 9,000+ veterans informed
of opportunities and changes to the VA rules with a monthly
newspaper column, as well as periodic news releases and
radio and TV spots. This office is represented on the
Aging Planning Board, Health Carolinians, and the Military
Affairs Committee to keep open lines of communication
and a better-informed population. VA pamphlets and forms
are available in this office.
Veterans'
organizations are supported by the VSO through participation
on the Carteret County Veterans Council, the coordinating
body and sponsor of veteran events. The two major events
each year are the Memorial Day Ceremony and the Veterans
Day Parade.
Hank
Gotard has been Carteret County's Veterans Services Officer
since December 1994. He serves as an advocate for veterans
in their dealings with the VA and as a liaison with numerous
governmental agencies.
