The
Register of Deeds Office is located in the Administration
Building at Courthouse Square in Beaufort, North Carolina.
The office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through
Friday excluding holidays.
The
mission of the Register of Deeds is to act as legal custodian
of all land titles and all land transaction documents
in Carteret County. As legal custodian of land transactions
and other miscellaneous documents, the Register of Deeds
Office files and records deeds, deeds of trust, Uniform
Commercial Codes (UCCS), corporations, assumed names,
military records, and other legal papers; registers delayed
birth records and issues marriage licenses; issues certified
copies of vital records such as births, deaths and marriages;
administers the oath to Notaries Public. The Register
of Deeds has the responsibility and liability for canceling
deeds of trust and mortgages, and indexing and cross
indexing all documents filed.
All
official records are public records and may be viewed
or copied for anyone. The public can find documents at
the Carteret County Register of Deeds in the vault area.
Once
a documents book and page are assigned, the public can
view the actual documents and/or make paper copies. If
you need help obtaining a copy of a recorded document,
clerks are available to assist you.

Vital
Records:
Certified
copies of birth, death and marriage certificates may
be obtained from the Vital Records Department located
in the vault. Only those births, deaths and marriages
that occur in Carteret County are available at this office.
Your
drivers license or state issued picture ID is required
to receive a certified copy. The fee is $10.00.

If you are 22 years of age or older acceptable identification would include:
- Certified
copy of Birth Certificate (this must be accompanied
by a drivers license or picture I.D.)
- Passport
- Military
ID Card
- Drivers
License
If
you are between the ages of 18 and 22 you must provide
both of the following:
- Certified
Copy of Birth Certificate
- Drivers
License or Picture I.D.
All
applicants must provide their Social Security cards.
If you do not have a card, a pay stub or W-2 Form may
be used. If you have not been assigned a number, an affidavit
must be completed.
All
applicants under 18 should contact the Register of Deeds
Office at 252-728-8474 before applying.
Divorced
applicants must provide the month and year of last divorce.
There
is no waiting period after the license is issued, however
it must be
used within 60 days or you will have to apply for another one.
Copies
of your Marriage License may be acquired at our office
in person or by mail at Register of Deeds, Courthouse
Square, Beaufort, NC 28516. Certified copies are $10.00.
