Carteret County Recycle Program Information
DEFINITIONS of waste collected at Convenience Sites around the
county.
Batteries Lead-Acid automobile batteries are accepted at the county
sites.
C&D
Waste
Solid Waste resulting solely from remodeling, repair or demolition
by a resident on residential housing in quantities normally
associated with residential housing maintenance. This is
expected to be
no more than a small pickup load, a 2 CY quantity – Large
truckloads will be directed to CRSWMA facilities at Hibbs
Road.
Household Bulky Items
These items also referred to as “bulk material” include
household furniture, mattresses, and bedding.
Mixed Recyclables
Cardboard, newspapers, glass (brown, green, and clear), aluminum
and bi-metal beverage & food cans, and plastic beverage containers
(HDPE & PET).
MSW
Any solid waste, garbage and refuse as defined in the Solid Waste
Management Ordinance of Carteret County, resulting from the operation
of a residential establishment that would normally be collected,
processed, and disposed of through a public or private solid
waste management service.
Waste Oil
This waste is used motor oil resulting from the maintenance of
household engines such as automobiles, trucks, boats and lawn & garden
equipment.
White Goods
These items include inoperative or discarded refrigerators, ranges,
water heaters, freezers, or other similar domestic appliance.

This is solid waste consisting solely of vegetative matter such
as leaves, pine straw, pinecones, grass trimmings, and small
limbs in quantities normally associated with residential yard
maintenance.
Unauthorized Waste
The County will not accept or transport any hazardous waste as
defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or any other
waste that would not be acceptable for disposal at the Coastal
Regional Solid Waste Authority (CRSWMA) Facilities.

are for Residential Waste.

Waste Collection Day each year. Check under Hazardous Waste for

fluids (used motor oil, transmission and brake fluids) in storm
drains (sewers) or drainage ditches is harmful to our waterways.
Antifreeze, particularly the ethylene glycol type, when poured
out or spilled on the ground can be highly toxic to animals and
its sweet taste attracts them. Spent antifreeze may also contain
heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and benzene.

or reuse. Check the Yellow Pages for a list of “Cleaners”.
Compact Disks
Remember that reuse is the most effective form of recycling. Many
music stores will purchase used CDs (i.e. On Cue Musicbooks & More
(252) 222-0704)). Check with your favorite music store or the
Yellow Pages.
CDs are made of polycarbonate, a high-quality plastic, with a
metal coating. CDs can be recycled, but only a small fraction is
actually usable. There is little concern about putting them in
landfills because they aren't considered hazardous - but the material
takes about 450 years to break down. It is estimated as many as
30 million CDs are tossed in the garbage each month.
Recycled polycarbonate is often used in appliances and cars. The
following companies recycle CDs:
• GreenDisk

Electronic Equipment and Scrap
Remember that reuse is the most sensible form of recycling!
Many non-profit and charitable organizations are able to accept
used but usable electronic equipment, and offer them to schools,
community organizations, and needy individuals. By reusing electronic
equipment for its intended purpose, its useful life is extended
and those who may not be able to afford equipment are able to use
it. An additional benefit of reusing electronics is the conservation
of energy that it would take to manufacture new equipment.
Visit the Directory of Markets for Recyclable Materials, provided
by the NC division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental at
www.p2pays.org/DMRM/start.aspx for a list of electronic equipment
and scrap recyclers.

Eyeglasses
See Yellow Pages under "Opticians". The Lions Club has
boxes in most optician offices plus Walmart.
Fire Extinguishers
Households may bring fire extinguishers to the Household Hazardous
Waste Collection Day. Check under Hazardous Waste.
Businesses
should consider purchasing rechargeable and serviceable fire
extinguishers instead
of cheaper "disposable" fire
extinguishers. While a fire extinguisher that is rechargeable costs
more in the beginning, over time a quality rechargeable fire extinguisher
with a metal head will likely save you money.
Fluorescent Bulbs
These lights may contain mercury, a hazardous material. Residents
can bring them to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day,
check under Hazardous Waste. Do not break fluorescent tubes.
Businesses and institutions are required by law to recycle fluorescent
lamps if they produce more than a certain amount per year. For
a list of companies that manage fluorescent lights and other mercury
containing items, visit the Directory of Markets for Recycled Materials,
provided by the Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental
Assistance at www.p2pays.org/DMRM/start.aspx.
There are mercury-free fluorescent lamps now available through
Phillips and other manufacturers.

the environment, especially our water supplies, and endanger
human health if not disposed of properly. Purchasing latex paint
is best and some stores even sell recycled paint.
Residents can bring both latex and oil based paint to the Household
Hazardous Waste Collection.
If you have only a small amount of latex paint to dispose of you
can safely dry the paint out at home by removing the lid and allowing
